Choosing paint finishes for each room
9 Oct 2026
The finish of a paint affects how it looks, how easy it is to clean and how well it hides wall flaws.
Matt
Hides small imperfections and gives a soft look. Good for bedrooms and ceilings, but marks are harder to wipe off.
Satin or silk
A middle option with a slight sheen that is easier to clean. Suits living rooms, corridors and children's rooms.
Gloss
Very durable and easy to wash, but shows every flaw underneath. Often used on doors, window frames and trim.
Kitchens and bathrooms
Choose moisture-resistant paint and good ventilation. Humid rooms can peel cheaper paint quickly.
Estimating quantity
Use the Paint Calculator to estimate litres for your wall area and number of coats. Buy a little extra so all walls come from the same batch.
